Abstract

We have carried out the performance comparison between 980 and 1480-nm pumping for bismuth-based EDFAs. 980-nm pumping was observed to provide no NF benefit relative to 1480-nm due to the overall population decrease in the 4I13/2 state caused by the combination of the pump ESA and the PIQ. 1480 nm was found to be the better considering the signal gain and NF.
