Abstract
The room-temperature hydrogen maser1 is the most stable existing frequency standard for a wide range of measuring times. As such it has been used very successfully for tests of general relativity, for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and for interplanetary navigation (Voyager mission). Since some years work is going on to build a sub-Kelvin H maser for improving the frequency stability by one or more orders of magnitude.2
