Abstract

The distinction between deterministic and stochastic instabilities in actively mode-locked lasers is investigated theoretically and experimentally. A linear stability analysis performed on the gaussian iterative model predicts deterministic instabilities. Experiments made with a Nd:YAG laser have revealed the appearance of periodic instabilities as the modulation frequency is detuned from optimum. Spontaneous emission can trigger periodic Q-switching with an apparently deterministic character.
