Abstract

To date much study has been carried out to investigate the origin of the second order nonlinearity in silica-based glass fibers, bulk glasses, and glass films. Glass materials have a lot of advantages such as transparency, low loss, ready availability, and low cost. If the mechanism of the origin is made clear, the glass film waveguide will prepare potential devices for frequency doubling, or electro-optic modulation and switching. In this paper an experiment of the phase matched blue second harmonic generation was done and a phenomenological model responsible for the induced second order nonlinearity in the glass films is proposed.
