Abstract

There is currently great interest in the use of quasi-phasematched waveguide devices for a variety of frequency conversion applications. A number of ferroelectric materials have been studied that permit periodic poling and waveguide fabrication, such as lithium niobate (LN), lithium tantalate (LT), and potassium titanyl phospate (KTP). In KTP, periodic domain inversion can be produced using an applied electric field,1 and waveguides can be fabricated using a Rb↔K ion-exchange process.2 Compared to LT and LN, KTP has the advantage that the coercive field is much lower (~ 2kV/mm).
