Abstract
Spatial solitons represent a balance between diffraction in continuous or linear coupling in discrete systems and a nonlinearly induced phase modulation which can be evoked e.g. by cubic (SPM, XPM) or quadratic nonlinearities (phase modulation due to frequency mixing). These peculiar nonlinear objects behave in many situations, e.g. in the presence of perturbations and in collisions, like robust particles. Until now primary emphasis was paid to the behavior of spatial solitons in conservative systems where energy, momentum and angular momentum are conserved [1]. They can be viewed as self-guiding beams which can be potentially used for ultrafast all-optical routing and steering.
