Abstract

The basic theory of two-wave parametric solitons in materials with a pure quadratic (or χ(2)) nonlinearity is now well understood, and importantly, many of the results have been confirmed experimentally [1]. In particular, in bulk media, families of stable spatial solitons exist above a certain threshold power [2]. Their excitation from input Gaussian beams has been confirmed both numerically [3] and experimentally [4]. In fact self-focusing, leading to a catastrophic collapse, cannot occur in χ(2) media [5].
