Abstract

AlGaAs waveguides have proven to be ideal testing grounds for new concepts in Kerr spatial solitons. They exhibit a combination of a high nonlinear refractive index (n2=1.5×l0−13 cm2/W) and low linear (waveguide losses 0.1-0.15cm−l) and nonlinear loss in the 1.55/μm communications band, together with the possibility to integrate optical and electronic devices and a mature growth and processing technology.
