Abstract
Theoretical analysis of the wave equation in nonlinear, planar waveguides has revealed a rich variety of guided wave solutions, some of which may have practical applications1. The majority of analytical work in this area has been restricted to step index structures, since these are the only ones for which exact solutions are available. For more general structures, numerical methods can be used but, for nonlinear problems, these can sometimes be difficult to apply.
