Abstract

Future transmission systems may use third-order non-linear effects in single-mode fibres to provide optical signal processing functions [1]. Low cost, compact and reliable implementations of non-linear systems will use semiconductor pump lasers. The operating life of such lasers and the consequent system reliability is improved by reducing the power consumption. The subject of this paper is the optimisation of the fibre waveguide structure so as to obtain the maximum non-linear effect for a given pump power.
