Abstract

Rare earth doped fibre lasers have recently been investigated as sources of ultrashort pulses. Several different mode-locking mechanisms have been investigated [1-3]. Recently several research groups have observed the passive mode-locking of Er fibre lasers using an effective fast saturable absorber based on non-linear polarisation [3,4]. Pulses as short as 180 fs have been directly generated from an Er fibre laser by exploiting this process [5]. In this presentation we identify and quantify the role of non-linear polarisation in the modelocking dynamics of a hybridly mode-locked Er fibre laser.
