Abstract
The nonlinear optical properties of polydiacetlylenes (PDA) in the solid state are of interest both from a fundamental and a technological viewpoint. The third order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) for a number of these materials has been measured and the electronic nonresonant χ(3) has been found to be relatively large (> 10-11esu)1 and ultra-fast (<1ps)2. One particular PDA, poly [5,7-dodecadiyne- 1,12-diolbis(n-buto- xycarbonylmethylurethane] (P4BCMU) has received much attention due to its solubility and the ability to spin-coat the material into thin film wave- guide form. However recently Hasegawa et al3 have demonstrated that this polymer may also be thermally evaporated.
