Abstract

The loss in optical fibers can be compensated by optical amplifiers, and fiber chromatic dispersion can be avoided in dispersion-shifted fibers. The overthrow of these two limitations on system length and capacity brings the subject of fiber nonlinearity to the forefront. This presentation will examine the nonlinear processes that occur in fibers used for optical communications, and describe how they affect the performance and design of lightwave systems.
