Abstract
Second-harmonic (SH) generation in waveguides has been extensively studied in recent years [1, 2]. One scheme that has received great attention is so-called surface-emitting second harmonic generation (SESHG) which involves nonlinear mixing of two oppositely propagating guided waves to generate coherent SH (or sum-frequency) light emitting from the waveguide surface. It has been demonstrated that a significant nonlinear harmonic conversion efficiency can be obtained in SESHG waveguides consisting of a quasi-phasematched AlxGa1-x As multilayer structure [3]. It has also been shown that these SESHG waveguides have potential applications in novel optoelectronic devices such as integrable optical correlator, picosecond signal processing device, WDM demultiplexer, optical interconnect and frequency doubler for semiconductor lasers [3-6].
