Abstract

There have been many recent demonstrations of soliton behaviour in actively and passively mode-locked erbium fibre lasers [1, 2]. The work described here investigates theoretically and numerically the behaviour of solitons in the presence of electro-optic phase modulators, the essential component in FM mode-locked laser cavities. The topic also has relevance to future soliton transmission systems in that electro-optic amplitude modulators have been shown to control the growth of timing jitter known as Gordon-Haus effect [3, 4]. Here the equivalent results for combined bandwidth filtering and phase modulation are presented.
