Abstract
Molecular engineering of materials, which relies on the advanced art of organic chemistry and the facile assembly of molecular components, is reviewed. The behavior of molecular hyperpolarizability and correlations with other properties are illustrated. Examples of the discovery or creation of prospective NLO materials illustrate how the frontiers of materials science are often tested.
