Abstract
Formation of CaF2 nanocrystals codoped with Tm and Yb ions in glass-ceramics has been controlled by power and exposure time of CO2 laser beam. Micro x-ray diffraction analysis showed two phases of CaF2 and Ca2SiO4. The glass-ceramics containing nanocrystals showed much enhanced upconversion emission from Tm3+ ions under 980 nm excitation due to energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ ions.
