Abstract

An Er3 +-doped fiber amplifier is a very attractive device for single-mode fiber communication systems in the 1.5 μm wavelength band1,2. For the practical applications of optical fiber amplifiers in such systems, the temperature characteristics3-6 of Er3+-doped optical fiber is a key parameter. It has been reported that 1.48 μm pumping is more sensitive to temperature than 0.98 μm pumping.5,6 However, characteristics such as fiber length dependence have not yet been investigated.
