Abstract

Recent progress in the technical feasibility studies on long haul optical transmission systems using EDFA is quite remarkable. At present, it will be a common recognition that the EDFA is a promising technology for near future application to various optical transmission systems such as local distribution networks, terrestrial trunk lines and submarine cable systems. This paper reviews the recent results of feasibility studies and outline of future applications to submarine cable systems.
