Abstract

Optical Amplifiers may find applications in long haul terrestrial transmission systems. However, optically amplified systems must be designed differently from digitally regenerated systems. To test the practicality of using optical amplifiers in the network, we have done a 4 channel field experiment spanning 840 km of dispersive fiber through 13 amplifiers. We discuss the field experiment and results, and implications for system design.
