Abstract

Photonics will play an important role in future high capacity switching blocks to overcome the speed limitation imposed by the electronics. Semiconductor optical amplifiers are promising components in such systems because they can serve as gates and frequency converters and at the same time compensate for splitting losses [1]-[6]. Here, we demonstrate fast optical gating (-100 ps) using a two-section semiconductor optical amplifier with optical or electrical control.
