Abstract

Since their first demonstration[1] 1.3µm praseodymium doped fluoride fibre amplifiers (PDFFAs) have been shown to offer high gains (>30dB)[2] and extremely high saturated output powers (>200mW)[3], Furthermore recent results have indicated that practical pumping options do exist which could enable good device performance for sensible pump sources[4,5]. As such it is likely that a fully developed 1.3µm PDFFA will have a significant role to play in the evolution of optical telecommunications networks.
