Abstract

Recently, soliton transmission technology has matured considerably through the use of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).1~3 The lumped amplifier technique using EDFAs made it possible to move the idea of soliton communication into the developmental stage. This technique has a wide range of applicability from La (amplifier spacing) ⪡ Zsp (soliton period) to La~Zsp, depending on the maximum required transmission distance.
