Abstract
We present bit error rate calculations for two important schemes of all optical signal processing exploiting semiconductor optical amplifiers: four wave mixing and cross gain compression. We refer to the effect of deterioration caused by data induced nonlinear interference, and suggest a simple detection system that would reduce this deterioration significantly in the case of cross gain compression. We also demonstrate the vast advantage achieved by the use of short pulses in systems that exploit four wave mixing.
