Abstract

Network providers face a challenge in maximizing the use of their fiber infrastructure. Optical amplifiers are designed to provide longer span lengths between traditional optoelectronic lightwave transmission equipment. Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) techniques, coupled with optical amplification, can greatly extend the useful life of the existing fiber plant. This paper describes MCI’s deployment activities for Optical Fiber Amplifier (OFA) systems, discusses related technical and standards issues, and points out constraints on upgrading initial fiber amplifier systems. Optical Amplification will need to supply flat gain multiwavelength-capable optical amplifiers, and provide system and component modeling capabilities to prove performance.
