Capacity upgrade of transmission systems by Raman amplification

Abstract

A new method of upgrading the data rate of a transmission system from 2.5 Gb/s to 10 Gb/s without changes to the fiber span is demonstrated. Raman gain from pump light injected at the receiver provides a 7.4-dB improvement in sensitivity.
