Abstract

As in the broader field of optical fiber fabrication, details of the processing of erbium-doped optical fiber (EDF) remain carefully guarded by each manufacturer. The fabrication techniques, fiber compositions and level of quality control are proprietary. In the early years of research on rare-earth doped optical amplifiers, there were many descriptions of novel means devised for doping optical fiber with these troublesome elements. As techniques such as solution doping and vapor phase processing have become commercial, we have seen very few publications describing resolution of processing issues. This lack of published work is not an indication of a lack of activity, however.
