Abstract
Rare-earth-doped planar waveguides have been investigated with various host materials, such as silica-based glass, multi-component glass and LiNbO3. Planar waveguides doped with Er have been studied with a view to employing them in future optical communication systems. At first, studies focused on an examination of optical amplification, and the fabrication process was improved in order to achieve a high gain. The highest gain 28 dB was observed with a 40-cm-long Er-doped P-codoped silica waveguide fabricated by flame hydrolysis deposition and reactive ion etching techniques.
