Abstract

To say that optical communications are engaged in an accelerated capacity race, in view of providing ever-greater bandwidth to operators, is a mere understatement. Submarine transmission systems, already carrying 90% of the telephone traffic between continents, now experience an intense and unprecedented market pull.
