Abstract

For an erbium-doped DBR planar waveguide laser, the impact of internal waveguide losses on the grating design have been studied using a numerical model. The results show that laser performance is strongly dependent on the modulation strength and the length of the gratings, and that there exists an optimal value of the modulation strength for a given length of the gratings. Using this information we show that it is possible to design an asymmetric DBR laser that emits all the output power in one direction only.
