Abstract

Internet and data traffic is fueling an explosion in the demand for information capacity over the backbone optical transmission network. Data traffic that 10 years ago was approximately 5% of total bandwidth now is nearly equal to voice traffic and in 10 years time will grow to be 95%. To meet this capacity demand the commercialization of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers was the key technology for massive deployment of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM).
