Abstract

Increased complexity and the analog character of optically amplified transparent networks necessitates the use of simulations to understand the performance of optical systems, to develop upgrade strategies and evaluate new technologies. Different applications for simulations will be discussed e.g. comparison of the performance of dispersion-compensation schemes, modulation formats, and the optimization of defined basic sections for network upgrade towards high bit rate WDM.
