Abstract

We describe the relationship between the decrease in gain and the decrease in amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) due to degradation. From this relationship, it is clarified that the change in gain is proportional to the change in the ASE power and that a 1-dB decrease in ASE power approximately corresponds to a 1-dB decrease in optical gain. This result means that the decrease in gain can be directly evaluated by the decrease in the ASE power. We also describe that the polarization dependent gain is stable in the degradation. This result leads an effective method for estimating the lifetime of the SOA.
