Receiver noise modeling in presence of optical amplification

Abstract

The Gaussian approximation with exact moments is shown to yield the most reliable bit error probability estimates for practically relevant receivers, outshining more sophisticated approximations (e.g. non-central chi-square), often thought of as being more precise.
