Abstract

We review recent progress in our gain-shifted thulium (Tm3+)-doped fiber amplifiers (GS-TDFAs) operating in the S-band (1480-1530 nm) as well as the basic operational concept of gain shifting. We obtained high optical efficiency (29%) and high output power (+21.5 dBm) by employing a laser-diode pumping scheme of 1.4 and 1.56 microns. Amplification characteristics confirm the applicability of GS-TDFAs to large-capacity WDM networks.
