Abstract

We propose a burst-mode optical amplifier based on a gain-clamped praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier (PDFA) to enlarge the transmission distance between an OLT and ONUs regardless of transmission bit-rate and/or transmission protocol. We investigate the gain dynamics of a gain-clamped PDFA for burst mode amplification and confirm the ability of gain-clamping to suppress optical surges.
