Abstract
Most inverse problems in remote sensing employing electromagnetic measurements of some sort may be put in the form of a Fredholm integral equation in which the unknown to be recovered appears inside the integral. Although the governing equation is simple enough in appearance, direct attempts to solve for the unknown almost always lead to failure. This failure appears as an instability in the solution with large, highly unrealistic oscillations.
