Abstract
Visual problems related to near work are an old issue that has attracted renewed interest with the introduction of video display technology. A puzzling aspect of this problem, which we believe is of central importance, is the fact that some people suffer severe symptoms while others experience little or no difficulty in the same work environment. Evidence that the resting state of the eyes corresponds to an intermediate distance, which varies widely among individuals who have normal vision, suggested that problems of near work may depend on the individual’s oculomotor resting posture.
