Phase pulling effects in Raman amplifiers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We have numerically studied transient forward and crossed-beam Raman scattering by varying both the Raman linewidth and gain. We have found the phase of the output Stokes beam in both space and time is primarily dependent on the Raman linewidth and nearly independent of the gain, i.e., the Stokes output phase does not depend on the conversion efficiency. The narrower the Raman linewidth or the longer the relaxation time, the more the output Stokes phase is pulled by the input pump phase. Conversely, the broader the Raman linewidth or the shorter the relaxation time, the more the output Stokes phase is controlled by the input Stokes phase. If the input pump and Stokes phases are correlated, their phases remain unchanged.
