Abstract
Optical wavelength-scale surface microstructures, both periodic morphologies in planar geometries and higher-dimensional cavity morphologies, drastically modify material optical characteristics and lead to striking changes in the response to optical excitation. Examples are drawn from laser-material interactions and optoelectronic devices. Novel device structures, involving both thin film and heterostructure materials, are discussed.
