Abstract

Laser diodes and laser diode arrays now provide significant average power. They are efficient, compact, and reliable. Laser diode-pumped solid-state lasers can be equally compact and reliable, but they operate typically at 1/3 of the efficiency of their diode pumps and are more costly. To find wide use they must have significant performance advantages.
