Abstract
With the increasing deployment of optical fibers in transmission systems and the demand for high bandwidth services, such as video and high definition TV, in the foreseeable future, high-speed switching of the order of Gbit/s is desirable in telecommunications. Optical switching is one of the most promising techniques to achieve this high switching speed. However, most of the optical switching techniques developed so far belong to space-division switching, in which switching speed is not a major concern. Very few optical switching techniques, to our knowledge, are for high-speed time-division switching.
