Abstract
A few low-order Legendre polynomial moments of the angle-dependent single-scattering function can be estimated from the backscattered radiance long after a Dirac delta incident pulse, according to computer simulations.1 The accuracy of these estimates is shown to be possibly reduced for a pulse fo finite width, with a greater effect for the higher-order moments. Accurate estimates are confirmed to be more difficult to obtain when random or systematic experimental errors are simulated in the backscattered radiance. Use of a curve-fitting procedure now being used to process experimental data taken to test the inverse method is shown to ameliorate the effects of noise.
