Abstract
Prior to the extensive use of computers to calculate the theoretical performance of optical thin films, designers relied on graphic techniques to obtain solutions to specific problems. Now, with the advent of inexpensive computers, graphic techniques remain useful to gain insight into design performance and as a pedagogical aid. Several exact and approximate techniques which have previously been described1,2 are reviewed including the Smith chart, reflectance and admittance circle diagrams, and vector diagrams. The use of each technique is compared for high- and low-reflectance designs and advantages of each technique for various types of coating are discussed.
