Weak ground glass diffusers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

It is often necessary to add diffusers to an optical system to improve its performance. The two primary reasons are to increase the uniformity of the illumination and increase the solid angle of the illumination or the apparent source size. This latter situation is especially important when imaging objects have surface defects. The use of diffuse illumination to hide these phase defects is sometimes called scratch suppression.
