Generalized electronic halftoning procedure

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Electronic halftoning is frequently applied in picture and hologram coding. The result is a binary representation of 2-D information on a sampled raster. Those binarization procedures which use carrier functions or dither are simple and suitable for digital implementation. In general, a compromise between detail resolution and gray-tone reproduction is necessary. Furthermore, the performance of the halftoning process on a discrete raster causes interaction between the raster and carrier. To overcome some problems which conventional methods of this type suffer from we introduce an additional degree of freedom by allowing rational ratios between the raster and carrier period. The concept is demonstrated by a 1-D triangular-shaped carrier function.
