Digital computing utilizing optical Fredkin gates

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Cascadable digital processors based on 2- and 3-D optical Fredkin gate arrays are described. The 2-D structure consists of an integrated optical array of channel waveguides and a page-oriented holographic memory. The 3-D structure consists of arrays of ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulators and Wollaston prisms. The Implementation of residue addition and multiplication with these processors is analyzed. Analytic expressions are derived for the required number of holograms and the number of waveguide channels in the 2-D structure and the size and number of spatial light modulators in the 3-D structure to achieve the above operations.
