Abstract
The lensless optical shadow-casting (OSC) technique1 may be used for realizing multiple-valued logic operations to reduce both the interconnection bottleneck and the number of total logic elements. The original OSC scheme utilized only two types of input code (transparent and opaque) and was thus limited in scope; the design of binary units often involved LEDs having nonidentical output intensities. The OSC scheme was recently extended2,3 to include polarized input codes, sources, and a decoding mask. The input encoding is determined for a particular mask and a fixed source pattern (all LEDs preferably unpolarized).
