Test of a vector model for the combined effect of color and luminance contrast in figure-ground segregation

Abstract

A single border between two adjacent colored fields of light of equal luminance becomes more visible when luminance contrast is introduced and is less likely to fade on steady fixation. Measurements of the visibility of a border of this kind are consistent with a model that combines chromatic contrast and luminance contrast as orthogonal vectors.1 In the experiments described here a test of this model was performed using a stimulus pattern that consisted of a thin rectangular figure centered on a larger rectangular ground.
