Abstract

The Hamiltonian for an electron in an effective atomic coulomb field and a strong laser field is If we restrict the operator r to diagonal elements in the principal quantum n, solutions can be approximated by substituting for r, where K is the Coulomb symmetry generator (Runge-Lenz vector). An extraordinary result is that the electron's response is orthogonal to E0: there is no component of the dipole in the E0 direction.
